Butler? … subtler …. WHICH and WHAT?

WHICH song and from WHAT musical?

An act of cannibalism in which the couple serve pies based on the professional throats he has just slit and from which she willl bake pies, the lines go:

She: Tinker?

He: Something pinker.

She:  Sailor?

He: Something paler.

She: Butler?

He: Something subtler.

She: Pottter?

He: Something hotter?

She: (aggrieved by his superior rhyming- and his smugness) Locksmith?

(long pause – he has been bested)

Love-letter to the theatre

My final piece of theatre and they pulled it off magnificently! Six crazy people, a gifted man at the piano and they pulled it together brilliantly.

You see, you take a small bunch of talented professionals (what I’d call ‘artists’), a formidable amateur soprano, a raconteur-par-excellence’ reading excerpts from a book I’d written about Mum (plus a few words of his own he’d strung together), a couple of surprises, a musical director who’s a guru … or a God, and a bent visionary. Put ”em together and what have you got…you throw in a couple of friends as an audience, add a little cordial and stir in a room full-to-overflowing with love, and it morphs into a revue of some kind ItI was  the very thing I wanted, The very thing, Continue reading

Aunty Liz

Aunty Liz with Maddy and me on a fish and chip outing!

Alway, always, always in our minds, and forever in our  hearts. Let Maddy wash you clean with her pink tongue ; let Gina, and Snoopy dance at the reunion.

I arrived at Margaret Doody House on the Monday; on the Tuesday we visited her in Hospice,.  We were lucky to  see our beloved friend ., Apparently, she had called for the priest  the night before to administer the last rites. And still she lived to see us – how grateful were we. Continue reading

Vodka Christmas Cake …for the Freo Ladies Auxilliary cookbook

With thanks to Bronte (Margaret Dooody) for sharing, we were hunched over with laughter – in the komfee chair!.
Once again this year I’ve had requests for my Vodka Christmas Cake recipe, so here goes. Made mine this morning!

1 cup sugar, 1 tsp baking powder, 1 cup water, 1 tsp salt, 1 cup brown sugar, lemon juice, 4 large eggs, nuts, 1…bottle Vodka, 2 cups dried fruit.

Sample a cup of Vodka to check quality. Take a large bowl, check the Vodka again to be sure it is of the highest quality, then repeat. Turn on the electric mixer. Beat one cup of butter in a large fluffy bowl. Add 1 teaspoon of sugar. Beat again.

At this point, it is best to make sure the Vodka is still okay. Try another cup just in case. Turn off the mixer thingy. Break 2 eggs and add to the bowl and chuck in the cup of dried fruit.

Pick the fruit up off the floor, wash it and put it in the bowl a piece at a time trying to count it. Mix on the turner. If the fried druit gets stuck in the beaters, just pry it loose with a drewscriver.

Sample the Vodka to test for tonsisticity. Next, sift 2 cups of salt, or something. Check the Vodka. Now sh!t the lemon juice and strain your nuts. Add one table. Add a spoon of sugar, or somefink. Whatever you can find.

Greash the oven. Turn the cake tin 360 degrees and try not to fall over. Don’t forget to beat off the turner. Finally, throw the bowl through the window. Finish the Vodka and wipe the counter with the cat.

So, you thought I had vanished entirely …. 3 months without so much as a by-your-leave …. read on….
So, here I sit in deepest, darkest Australind, sheltered, safe,. secure … and pitiful. I have books to read that Heather (my sister) dribbles down to me here but it is Australind after all. And Collie is just the other side of the hill and is our birth-place. Deja vu.

Wisteria glory recalled

I once made a hand-held movie of the wistaria tunnel at Sheldrake Way. It was a time when the tunnel was full in bloom, before the bees droned in in their dozens to gather pollen, before Madeleine (the wonder dog) had a chance to develop an allergy to them, and at a time when Robert and I still ruled the world with parties and celebrations, and before unwellness, displacement, and dependence became my new norms a time when my nimble fingers skipped eagerly upon keys and made the piano (and the computer ) dance with delight upon my approaching. Pasta with potato … is this some kind of delerium?

Embed from Getty Images

A further three weeks in a hospital …. the Fremantle Hospital, to be precise, .. and still the Ladies Auxillary maintains that  indeed pasta can be served with potato. And that dried basil added to a tin of tomato soup makes it minestrone – it doesn’t. It barely makes it edible yet alone another food stuff. Continue reading

the moving camera

We had no video camera in our childhood home, the consequence of which is that footage of me doesnt start to appear until I am 23 –  with the productoin of The Boyfriend (followed closely by Cabaret).

What little footage of my time exists, I have begun to amasss on vimeo an album dedicated to a retrospective, the gathering of which includes:

  • me with that gorgeous choir Close Harmony  – 2 videos, 1 in action in Dunsborough at a Songfest, and 1 as a sampler
  • me reciting 2 poems 0–  Jennxxit to farewell Jenny from work. aand 1 about the wickedness of exercise for we Parkinsons sufferers
  • the glory of the wisaaria tunnel at Sheldrake Lodge in Willetton (thank you designer Neil Hansen and planter Bryan Aitken and gifter of half the plants,my beloved Anthnony – Madeleine makes a guest appearanccew midway through)
  • me executing the vicious musical satire of Tom Lehrer in “A Christmas Carol” inside the Riverton Library in 2015 (thanks to videography by Amy)
  • me in action in Fremantle in “Adventures of a poet” in which I declaimed various lengthy poems in character interrrupted by Close Harmony who sang under my (tremulous) baton
  • lastlly. No Stone Unturned, about our research travels to the USA  in 2016 to investigate the Papers of author of musicals Peter Stone  – this last movie, an assemblage of moving image taken on my ipod mini, has no subtititles or acxcompanying narrative  and might be incomprehensibke to all saave Robert and I. But it is entertaining – whatch out for the visit to the Hamptons midway through, the residence of widoq Mary – Robert loved it, and endeared himsaelf to the locals
